Finding the right specialist for you

You may see an OB/GYN and general practitioner regularly, but if you’re struggling to conceive, you need a fertility specialist. That’s where a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) comes in—they specialize in fertility issues and can help you decide on the best way forward. You’re going to be spending a lot of time with your RE throughout the fertility treatment process. Look for someone you feel comfortable confiding in, and someone you’re able to speak openly with.

When should you see an RE?
If you're:

Younger than 35

having unprotected sex for

Older than 35

What to look for in a fertility specialist and clinic

Beyond the basics, here are a few things to keep in mind as
you look for an RE, and the clinic in which they work:

Board certification

Make sure your RE is board-certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Size of clinic

Think about whether you’re comfortable being attended to by multiple doctors, or if you’d prefer to work with just one.

Availability

Ask whether your RE will be available to answer questions during “off hours”—and what will happen if your treatment falls on a weekend.

Travel time

IVF cycles can require extensive
monitoring—so if possible, choose one
close to home or work. Or, consider other options, like IVC, which may require fewer monitoring visits as decided by your doctor.

Support services

Fertility treatment can be an emotional rollercoaster. Ask if the clinic offers counseling or support groups to help you through it.

Insurance coverage

Many fertility clinics have financial specialists on staff who can help you figure out your insurance coverage for treatment and what your out-of-pocket cost may be. Find out if yours does.
